Jon Rahm Wins 2021 US Open at Torrey Pines
San Diego, CA – Jon Rahm (-6) won the 2021 US Open at Torrey Pines. He shot a final round 67, which equaled the lowest round of the week. The win marks the first major victory of the 26-year-old Spaniard’s career. He edged out Louis Oosthuizen by one stroke.
Coming down the stretch, it was clear that it was either going to be Rahm or Oosthuizen. After Rahm got up and down from the sand and rolled in a clutch downhill left to right birdie putt on his 72nd hole and Oosthuizen hit his tee shot out of bounds on 17, the picture became a little more clear. After making bogey, he needed to eagle the last to force a playoff with Rahm. He would go on to make birdie.
While the event as a whole may not have been the most entertaining major tournament in recent memory, the final round presented all kinds of ups and downs for golf fans to enjoy. At various points throughout the day, five of the world’s top ten players seemed like they could move into position to claim the victory.
Bryson DeChambeau and Rory McIlroy entered the day T4, two strokes back of leaders Russell Henley, Mackenzie Hughes, and Louis Oosthuizen. While Henley and Hughes (T13 and T15, respectively) faltered, Oosthuizen kept his cool and stayed near the top of the leaderboard.
DeChambeau looked like he may be the one to hoist the trophy and go back-to-back at the US Open after a bogey-free -2 front nine. But he stumbled coming home, going +4 on holes 11-13. It was a similar story for McIlroy, who was -1 on the front and went +3 on 11 and 12 before making up a stroke on the 13th.
Brooks Koepka and Collin Morikawa also looked like they might make a run at various points but birdies were at a premium for everyone in the field. The golf course played difficult as it typically does at a US Open. Viewers were treated to lots of mid-length par putts and while the setup allowed the cream to rise to the top, it also provided a stage for many less-heralded players to shine.
Not to mention Hughes and Henley, who are both well-established pros with wins under their belt, players like 36-hole leader 46-year-old Richard Bland (T50, +8), young Italian Guido Migliozzi (T4, -2), and Harris English (solo third, -3), whose ball-striking is well-known but hasn’t contended lately.
Next week, the PGA Tour heads to the Travelers Championship at TPC River Highlands in Connecticut. Dustin Johnson is the defending champion there and will tee it up against a field that also includes Patrick Cantlay, Bryson DeChambeau, and Brooks Koepka.
