Fort Worth, TX – Jason Kokrak (-14) won the 2021 Charles Schwab Challenge. Kokrak has been on a great run of form for months now. After closing the deal at the CJ Cup at Shadow Creek in late 2020 for his first career PGA Tour win, Kokrak has been knocking on the door for a second. Sunday afternoon he broke through again, beating Jordan Spieth and others to the finish line at Colonial Country Club.
Kokrak entered the final round trailing Jordan Spieth by one stroke. Though his final round was par from perfect with five bogeys and several dicey moments, Spieth faltered more often. He hit his approach shot into the water on 18 en route to a +3 73 that saw him end two strokes back of the winner and two in front of a pack of players at T3.
Though no one else really threatened to take control of the tournament, several players made big moves on the weekend. The pack at T3 (-10) included Patton Kizzire, Sebastian Munoz, Ian Poulter, and Charley Hoffman. Hoffman, who has been in fine form as of late, made the biggest move of the day, shooting 65 and vaulting himself up 14 spots.
Troy Merritt also shot 65 and jumped 27 places to end up in solo seventh place at -7. Betting favorites and last year’s playoff winner and runner-up Daniel Berger and Collin Morikawa both carded top 25s but failed to scare the top of the leaderboard.
Other notables included Sergio Garcia who opened with a 63 and looked a threat to win the tournament before steadily going downhill, ending with a 76 and T20 finish at -4; last week’s PGA Champ Phil Mickelson failed to make the cut; as did high ranking players Patrick Reed and Scottie Scheffler.
Next week, the PGA Tour heads to Muirfield Village, Ohio for the Memorial Tournament. Jon Rahm is the defending champ there and will compete against a field that includes Bryson DeChambeau, Viktor Hovland, Rory McIlroy, Xander Schauffele, and Jordan Spieth.
