Gillisonville, SC — Garrick Higgo has won the 2021 Palmetto Championship at Congaree. Chesson Hadley was the unlikely favorite heading into the final round of the tournament. Despite missing the cut in his last five tournaments, he was the leader by four shots at 14-under par. However, early into his round, he carded a few bogeys. Meanwhile, Harris English caught up to him with a few birdies and suddenly, what looked to be a likely win for Hadley was put into question.
From there, many others came into the picture with a shot to win. Bo Van Pelt, Jhonattan Vegas, and Hudson Swafford, among others, looked to have a chance, but when it was all said and done, it was Higgo who got to hoist the trophy in only his second start on the PGA tour and his first win.
Yes, that’s right, thanks to Hadley’s bogey on the last hole, and other players like Van Pelt and English faltering at the end, it was the 21-year-old South African Higgo who hung on to snatch the tournament in a shock to everyone. He shot a 68 on Sunday to score a total of 11-under. Known as a bomber of the golf ball, he’s already been a sensation internationally. He’s been lighting up the European Tour with three wins, two happening this year.
There were of course others in contention throughout the event. 46-year-old Van Pelt also made a noticeable charge over the weekend. After scoring 66 on Saturday, he continued to be dialed in on Sunday carding multiple eagles and birdies to shoot 68 and finish at 10-under-par, tied for second among six others.
Other notables included Dustin Johnson who looked like he was dialed in the early rounds but faded on Saturday with a 72. On Sunday, it looked like he had a chance before three-putting and carding a triple-bogey on the 16th hole taking him out of the running. He would finish tied for tenth place at 8-under par. The other favorite among the betting crowd at the beginning of the week was Tyrrell Hatton who finished at 10-under par, tied for second place as well.
Next week, the PGA Tour heads to Torrey Pines in San Diego for the iconic U.S. Open. The tournament is returning to the site of Tiger Woods’ 14th major and epic 19-hole playoff win against Rocco Mediate on a broken leg, back in 2008. This year, Bryson DeChambeau will be looking to defend his title as U.S. Open champion against one of the toughest fields in golf, including world number one Dustin Johnson, his internet arch-rival Brooks Koepka, and many others.
